I would like to introduce to you all to The Kipling Street Project. Kipling Street is a beautiful neighborhood located in the New Center Area of Downtown Detroit. This project is being fueled by the artistic prowess of Luis Dixon and Bridget Franz.
The idea was formulated by the Kipling Street Neighborhood Block Club. A member of the club, Linda, made note that Kipling street is in a state of transition and peppered among the lush lawns and beautiful flower beds of inhabited homes are a few houses that are in need of a little tender loving care.
Me and Luis were introduced to these boarded up, abandoned houses by Cynthia, another member of The Kipling Street Neighborhood Block Club. She took us down the street, pointed out the houses and expressed her interest in having murals painted into the boarded windows of these vacant homes.
Me and Luis were more than eager to partake in this endeavor.
Luis expressed to Cynthia a bit of worry, "I hope we are okay working out here since the city is cracking down on tagging", to which Cynthia declared..
"IT IS NOT TAGGING, THIS IS BEAUTIFICATION!"
With the go ahead from Cynthia, and the support of the neighborhood.. we are turning these vacant homes into standing art galleries until the time comes for them to be inhabited once again.
We love Kipling Street and we love Detroit. <3
